happy birthday to me...

ok, it's not my birthday. it's not even my 1/2 birthday. it's two months since my birthday. but since i wasn't posting much around that time, i figured i'd post something now. and really, it's my blog, my rules. :)

as mentioned before, i have issues with my birthday. so, how did i spend this year? sick, sick, sick in bed. i vaguely recall calling in sick, and then not much until five o'clock. all i managed to do on my birthday was drag my ass out of bed and pick up a birthday meal at white spot. plus cake of course.

so, instead, i offer up tales from last year's birthday celebration.

i spent the week in los angeles. i arrived the day before new years eve.

the first night i was there, i went to a re-gifting party. i had never heard of this before, but i will steal this idea one day. everyone brings a gift they got that they do not want. i, of course, did not have any gifts with me. so me and my friend 'k' who i was staying with, went to target and hit the clearance racks. we ended up with a couple of chocolate/food type gift baskets for super cheap.

i think there must have been over 40 people there. i say people, and yes, they were people but i was the only female there. and the only straight person there as well. it was the beginning of my big gay trip to l.a. some of the guys were not thrilled to have me there, but most of them were fine.

the gifts ranged from stuff that was really cool, to truly awful. there was a lot of gay porn. a lot. i don't think i've ever seen so much, not even in the stores! the picture shows a bagel keeper being held by the son of a singer from an 80's hair band. i received a elephant wine bottle holder. i would post a picture, but i am not sure where it is right now.

the next day was new year's eve. my friend had a "date" in the afternoon. he was rather concerned about me but i'm like.. umm, i'm a grown up. i can amuse myself for an afternoon. but what are you going to do? i said, drop me off in an area with shopping and movie theatres and i'll be fine. so off it was to burbank for a little shopping and a movie or two. i shopped a little, and then i was ready for the movies. i figure, hey, i'm in l.a., no problem. big problem. the only movies playing were bad remakes and sequels to movies i'd never seen (king kong, cheaper by the dozen 2, yours, mine and ours). or brokeback mountain. my friend "l" and i had made a vow to go see it together. i knew if i went to see it, she would tear a strip off me. on the other hand, i knew if i didn't see it, when i got back, she would be like, i couldn't wait for you. i choose not to go. finally, i ended up going to see 'the ringer'. i only went to see it because i kinda have a thing for johnny knoxville. i sat in the theatre, alone, cursing my friend. turns out the movie wasn't that bad. for some reason, i thought they made fun of the special olympics. turns out the special olympics made fun of johnny knoxville. however, he was so not crush worthy in that movie.

i got a big kick out of these huge holiday balls.

check out the sky in this picture and above. yes, this is sunny l.a.!

for new years, i joined my friend and his roommate in their traditional celebrations. watching the original 'poseidon adventure' and eating chinese food. i had so much fun. i did it this year as well. i added my own twist as well. but that's for another post. i didn't see the remake but the original is hilarious. especially while watching with a group of witty gay men. we loved the hot pants!

next day, i checked into a hotel. i had decided that i didn't want to wake up on my birthday on a pull out sofa. been there, done that. so i decided to splurge a little and spend a night in a hotel. i ended up staying at the roosevelt hotel on hollywood boulevard. i can highly recommend it. it wasn't outrageously expensive, yet you felt fancy. it's got a ton of history, marilyn monroe lived there, the oscars were held there etc. and it's pretty much right across from grauman's chinese theater. i felt very classy staying there.

the hotel. my room was a corner suite. the bedroom window was on this side.

when booking a fancy hotel, always give them a reason to upgrade you. since it was my birthday, they gave me a free upgrade to a suite! the suite was bigger than a west end apartment. this is just the front room.

my fancy bed. more on this later.

the view from my bedroom window. those dots? rain.

the pool. see how it looks like it's bubbling? that's caused by the wind and the rain.

i decided to splurge and have a drink in my hotel bar. the bar had this godiva chocolate liqueur that i wanted to try but it was locked up and nobody seemed to have the key. someone nearby wanted to have some wine and even that was locked up. i eventually got some lesser chocolate martini for $14 and retired to my room to enjoy the luxury.

i was excited to find out i had a cd player in my bedroom. i put some tunes on and was bopping around the room. see that fancy bed above? pretty fancy huh? well, the mattress is actually bigger than the frame. while i was dancing to this, i banged into the bed. i remember thinking right before the moment of impact, nice big soft mattress, this won't hurt. ha! underneath the bed is a solid wood frame. which my shin proceeded to meet at a high velocity. the pain, the pain! now, some people who do not know me very well, say to me.. oh, you must have been drunk. those that know me, know i must have been sober. i have excellent balance when i've been drinking. i am a clutz when i am sober.

i woke up the next morning. happy birthday to me. in pain. my shin was killing me. and it was turning some lovely colours. plus there was this really loud noise. i couldn't figure it out. it was so loud, i finally got out of bed and tried to figure out where it was coming from. it sounded like outside. it was raining so hard and so loud it woke me up. and i'm from vancouver! luckily, it didn't last very long.

i did manage to go swimming in the pool. it was raining and i think people thought i was nuts. here is the pool, the mural is done by david hockney.

i spent the day walking around hollywood. i also visited the erotic museum.

eeek! scientologists! i found this both scary and confusing.

my friend 'k' got off work, picked me up and went headed out to disneyland and the house of blues to see social distortion. i had an awesome time. except it took me all night to figure out how to get down to the floor. and by then, it was too late.

oh, what a feeling...

before i get into my post, i'd just like to state...it's freakin' snowing here. huge flakes.

ok, on with my post.

as some of you may or may not know, i am in the process of listening to every single one of my cds (in reverse chronological order, sorta). i'm living the year 1996 right now. on my recent solo drive down to the states, i decided to listen to a four cd box set of canadian music.

here is what i learnt.

1. four cds, 77 record company picked songs is too much can con to listen to in a row.
2. some songs get funnier as time goes by. loverboy never does.
3. i own 'new orleans is sinking' by the tragically hip and 'try' by blue rodeo. two songs that have been on my wish list for ages.

in the country...

i can’t remember the last time i posted a strombo recap. i think it was last year sometime. more than ever, this is my version of the events. :)

last week was live, and the holy trinity returned. minus the holy part.

mr. stroumboulopoulos said it was nice to be on the air and not wanting to barf. last week, he was suffering from strep throat. he had a 102 degree fever. when he was doing interviews, it was like he could see the words come out of their mouths and disappear. people were telling him how good he looked, all rosy cheeked. bob laughed because he thought mr. stroumboulopoulos looked so bad. mr. stroumboulopoulos was sleeping on his couch and liz from 'the hour' texted him, go to the effing doctor. he hadn’t eaten in a day and a half. he went to the doctor in toronto and was asked how long he had been feeling like this. he felt like he was melting, his throat was killing him. the doctor told him he should have come in earlier. guys are idiots. bob wants to know why guys can’t admit they are sick. mr. stroumboulopoulos thought he would just fight it out. he takes the medication and flies to england. his body knows when it is not on the air and can fall apart. the medication ends up working.

bob says that when the show is on the road, people are unhappy. everything is hard to do as everyone is not in the same place. bob and mr. stroumboulopoulos have had no conversation about england until the show. bob is part of the audience for this one.

the various myspace teams are mentioned. bob thinks the fact that his icon is fries with his team name spelt out in ketchup is effing fabulous. alex has posted the pictures of bob with his fries on his myspace account.

radio clash – the clash

country house – blur

damon albarn’s bad interview is mentioned. bob thinks country house sounds like a song from a broadway musical. mr. stroumboulopoulos hates broadway musicals. he doesn’t like the stupid dancing. bob thinks mr. stroumboulopoulos is an anglo snob, that everything english is good. mr. stroumboulopoulos wants to stick a pin in bob’s neck for not liking blur. mr. stroumboulopoulos has ripped into bob before for liking broadway shows. alex doesn’t mind them, there are some good songs. he thinks rent has a good song. mr. stroumboulopoulos says no. bob brings up “ol man river’. this is an agreed upon good song. alex says sure, bob is a boob, but he wants to bring it back to mr. stroumboulopoulos riding bob about his opinion. bob says mr. stroumboulopoulos berated him for about ten minutes. mr. stroumboulopoulos says it is because he cares about bob. alex wants to know how is it bad for bob? bob suggests mr. stroumboulopoulos is a hypocrite. alex declares it’s just music. mr. stroumboulopoulos concedes that he likes some musicials. like tommy.

they talk about amy winehouse. alex isn’t interested. bob says that’s tough but fair. (i love it when he says this). mr. stroumboulopoulos says that he likes a lot of artists but rarely is he really into someone. he is into amy winehouse. he was on the red carpet at the brits. lots of celebs. kelly osbourne, cool. amy basically arrived wearing a belt as a skirt. mr. stroumboulopoulos says he doesn’t do the typical red carpet talk ie. what are you wearing? bob says more like what she wasn’t wearing. mr. stroumboulopoulos says he was well aware of that. he asked her about her year and she said it was pretty cool and that she was able to play a lot of pool. mr. stroumboulopoulos says dude, i stopped. he had no idea. he looked into her eyes. the camera was on his face. he was like a deer in headlights. he was stunned. he loved her even more because of that. alex says that it sounds like someone who hasn’t any interest in talking to you. mr. stroumboulopoulos says no she’s nice.

the talk turns to taking muffins from strangers. alex says don’t take food from strangers. bob says twelve years ago when he and mr. stroumboulopoulos started, that’s how they ate. mr. stroumboulopoulos says that alex is paid good money so he doesn’t have to eat from strangers and he is welcome. alex says whatever. don’t eat food from strangers.

a discussion about bob having a shaved head. bob thinks that he would look awesome. alex described bob’s current look as take a football, put it on it’s side. two eyes, nose, dirt around the mouth. that’s bob’s head right now.

stuff – bob has a topic this week. he and his wife were thinking of going tobogganing and they start to wonder… is tobogganing insane? mr. stroumboulopoulos says yes. alex says no, everyone does it. it’s stupid to think that there is something wrong with it. shut up. bob brings up the fact that we have tried to make things as safe as possible. alex interjects, that’s not true. alex says it’s about having fun. mr. stroumboulopoulos says that an ambulance attendant told him that the number one calls they get are from adult tobogganers. you forget how fast you go. bob thinks you can’t do it if you are not sober. alex has a scar from tobogganing, he almost went blind. he went tobogganing right after as he is not a baby.

against me is played. one of mr. stroumboulopoulos’ favourite bands.

mr. stroumboulopoulos mentions he used to be bald. (haha.. so, not going there)

someone complains about snow pants. alex says that’s the best part! crazy carpets are mentioned by name. (which i think is different from tobogganing but i think they are saying it is the same.) alex says it’s a marketing ploy. they aren’t that crazy. bob (perhaps) says they should be mediocre carpets. .

richard krause (?) is on. a discussion of the oscars.

a caller calls in and mentions spraying silicion on truck inner tubes. mr. stroumboulopoulos calls it pimpin’ your tube. the caller also mentions britney spears shaving her head to match her crotch. bob admires the fact that he waiting 30 minutes to say that.

a caller calls in and says that he used to get strep throat all the time until he changed his diet. he gave up dairy. mr. stroumboulopoulos says he doesn’t drink milk, but does cheese on a cheeseburger count? god forbid, i will get it non-stop.

next question about stuff.. are bored people boring? bob says yes. alex isn’t a big fan of the question. he says that bob would be wrong. it’s a dumb question and isn’t it a song lyric? mr. stroumboulopoulos agrees with alex. we are overstimulated and it is good to be bored. bob says there is a difference between being at peace and bored.

this week in bob.

monday – bad. alex was really really busy because someone had this great idea, oooh, let’s go to london. it was hard, and not in a good way like a boiled egg. it wasn’t hard because alex can’t do his job. it was that someone decided to mess up his day.

tues/weds – skipped. same reason as monday. alex emphatically states that he was busy, he had work to do.

thurs – alex says he is glad you asked. george, you will be interested in this. he walked into the writers room. he uses air quotes around the writer’s room because they have their meeting in the kitchenette. he needed to microwave his lunch. he doesn't remember what he was having. they were having their meeting, however, from what he can tell, the meeting was about crossword puzzles. they were having a lengthy discussion on how to finish them, what their favourite clues were, etc. he was going out of his freakin’ mind and these effing guys are going on about crosswords? mr. stroumboulopoulos tells bob he has to wait until the end. alex figures there must be a good reason for this. bob wouldn’t do this to us.

friday – nothing happened.

it is assumed alex is finished. but he says wait, wait i have to finish.

sunday - alex didn’t think he would have anything but bob decided to open his mouth. i don’t believe in bosses. what the hell is that? like boring people? that’s just dumb, they exist.

bob’s rebuttal – when someone interrupts the meeting, the meeting stops. alex says that’s your fault for having it in the kitchen. bob’s favourite clue, four letters what is buried in the studio…(hee hee)

hüsker dü

someone sends a message, i would do anything for a moment of boredom. mr. stroumboulopoulos says he is with you there.

noel gallagher cancels, no explanation. next day, they get him. bryan ferry. you are kinda over, you should show up when you are booked. the driver they sent to pick him up calls and says i don’t think he’s coming. they call his manager. his manager says he is very sorry, he is violently ill. we’ve called the doctor. this is said with a pouncy british accent. mr. stroumboulopoulos calls him a jackass. and that it turned out to be a better show in the end. a discussion on doctor house calls and mr. stroumboulopoulos says he has had a doctor make a house call for him.

bob calls 24 a republican travesty. they talk about can you be funny if you are right wing? about how dennis miller lost his humour once he went right wing. they discuss how funny he used to be. mr. stroumboulopoulos calls him possibly the best anchor snl has ever had. bob is very conservative in his views, but funny is funny. jim richards sends in kathleen madigan as a funny right wing comic.

things they like.

when alex tries to get more time, mr. stroumboulopoulos tells him he had a week to come up with something he liked.

mr. stroumboulopoulos discuss english tv and how it is superior in the writing. how it is far and away better than anything else in the world. the production values are awful tho. canada looks like the superbowl compared to them. he likes nathan barley.

bob talks about how he is a technophobe luddite. he doesn’t get into technology, he doesn’t understand it. but bob is into blogging. he has been adding to 'the hour' blog. he loves blogging. he thought it was wanking, but the idea that you can share your thoughts with others. now, he doesn’t not write as much in his diary. alex says, you have a diary? are you a thirteen year old girl? it’s perfect that you have one. does it start with dear diary? bob says dear diary, you can’t believe how mean alex is.

mr. stroumboulopoulos suggests that the man in the yellow hat is a pedophile. or is into bestiality. bob says that’s pretty dark dude. mr. stroumboulopoulos suggests he used the monkey to lure kids.

bob suggests he might try out more technology and give updates on strombo.com. the weightlifter pants experiment is brought up.

bob also thinks 24 sucks this year. bob is down on tv. however, american idol is even better this year. mr. stroumboulopoulos says bob is out of his freakin’ mind.

alex rented extras and thought it was all right. he stoled the bionic bit from that (which would you choose bionic arm or leg? mr. stroumboulopoulos chose leg)

bob blogging is discussed more. alex says that people would like to know what is going on in bob’s head. bob loves the comments in blogging. alex says that bob is a pretty sensitive person, and is surprised. bob finds it fascinating. alex thinks it is because it is more attention being given to bob.

the fact that bindi irwin is booked for the hour is brought up. mr. stroumboulopoulos doesn’t feel comfortable booking her. (perhaps this should have been brought up before she was booked)

the end.

ps. i originally declared this sunday's broadcast to be fancy shoe day, in homage to bob. however, i will be attending a five year old's birthday party and will not be around for the show this week. fancy shoes next week!

i am counting on my pals to keep me updated .. (evelyne, toccata..)

take care y'all.

rubber ducky, you're the one...

i went to seattle yesterday to pick up a friend from the airport.

i left an hour late, and among other things, my travelling companion jammed out too late for me to find anyone else to go down with. i forgot my birth certificate and the alpha male teenager at the border was not pleased. i wanted to scream out, just send me home to get it. i don't care. just stop being such a bastard. but i didn't. he let me thru after telling me it was my final warning. i wanted to add and my first, but didn't. and then it was like we both of us decided we needed to end the conversation on a nice note. i mentioned something about different id nicely, and he jumped all over that (nicely), offering suggestions.

i only had a few hours to spend in the states. my first destination was archie mcphee .

(yes, that is a pink flamingo in the tree)

it's this awesome toy/novelty shop. it's in ballard, a cool little district of seattle. it was founded by scandanavian fisherman or something like that. they have this big fish festival every year. ballard has a lot of funky little shops and restaurants/bars. one of my favourites is hattie's hat. i like to eat breakfast there. even if it's four in the afternoon. :)

i was good this trip. i spent less than ten bucks. but i couldn't resist picking up ninja duck.

here he is at home with his new pal, hot rod duck.

then it was time to go to tacoma. i got stuck in massive traffic, meaning that i didn't have as much time as i thought i would. but i did pick up a pair of shoes (#44). now, i know i am supposed to be on a shoe ban, but when i said that, i did say that did not include a pair of heels. i don't have any shoes with heels, and i wanted one pair. Pair #44 were under $15 and have heels.

plus they will go so nice with my new tights with the red velvet skulls on them.

then it was off to the airport. but first, why don't we sit in traffic for awhile? that seems like fun. :(

finally get to the airport, over an hour late. pick up my friend and we are both hungry, but all i want to do is get out of seattle and all the traffic. we breeze thru seattle, no problem. we hit everett, and bam! the worst traffic yet. it doesn't clear up properly until marysville. which of course, means nothing to anyone unless they are familar with the i-5. but believe me, it was a long time.

we finally end up being able to stop for food somewhere near burlington. we went to bob's burgers & brews. i pass this restaurant chain all the time, but have never gone in before. the food was pretty good, but the portions were enormous. next time i go, i will split the meal with a friend. the prices are pretty cheap, considering the amount of food they give you. i was happy because the soup of the day was baked potato which i love. what did not make me happy is the fact we had to sit next to a table with two families. they thought it was perfectly acceptable to allow their children to run around, crawl on the floor, and generally yell a lot. i secretly hoped the waitress bump into them and spill something on them. alas, it was not to be. :)

these are pictures of the bridge that was behind bob's.

somebody's watching you...

i found this post i wrote ages ago in my drafts. i thought it was kinda suitable for today being that it is the evil 'v' day.

i have a myspace dilemma. i may have created a situation where some guy on myspace thinks i'm some kind of potential stalker. or at the very least some kind of freak. maybe even a myspace whore. but all i really wanted to do was tell him that i liked his songs.

here is what happened. i got the link to a myspace page awhile back. it's a music account, not a personal account. i started listening to this guy's music, and i ended up listening to it a lot when i was job searching online. one night i was listening to it and i started to think, i wish i could just download these songs so i could listen to them on mp3 player. well, actually, first i wondered if this guy had a cd out, which turned out to be no so then i wanted to download the songs. anyways, i thought i would leave a comment on the guy's page and tell him that i enjoyed his work. if i am on myspace, and i like someone's work, i usually like to leave a comment so that other people can see it. i think that it helps the bands, having those comments public.

however, i couldn't comment so i ended up sending him an email. he emailed me back and it was then that i realized that when i had contacted him, i wasn't signed on to my 'real' account, but my blogging account. at first, i thought, no big deal. we communicated a bit, and he wanted to send me his mp3's but he started asking a lot of questions that i was unable to answer. i can't answer off my blogging account and i can't have him connect the dots back to my 'real' account. among other reasons, we don't have a lot of degrees of separation between us, and there are some potential 'issues' there.

i am pretty sure he thinks i'm some kind of freak. and i still don't have his mp3's.

three is a magic number...

i got this quiz/survey from both toccata and mellowlee. sometimes i do them, and sometimes i don't. so today, i decided to do it. of course, i got this ages ago. :)

the original number was four. as i have expressed before, i dislike the number four. so i have changed it to three. five was too much. :)

oh, and a side note about three. if you want to know if a number divides by three, you add up all the digits and if they divide by three, then the number divides by three. i learnt that when i was a little kid from marilu henner. and it has proven most useful in my life.

three jobs

1. busperson
2. chambermaid
3. record store clerk

three movies i would watch over and over: (just three?)

1. animal house
2. all about eve
3. high fidelity

added bonus question... three movies you can't pay me to watch again.

1. pretty woman
2. the shipping news
3. cocktail

three places i have been on vacation:

1. toronto
2. trinidad
3. corfu

three tv shows i love to watch:

1. 24
2. the mercer report
3. the daily show (sorry 'the hour', normally you would be here, but alas, i am not impressed lately)

three places i have lived:

1. vancouver, bc
2. jasper, ab
3. london, uk

three of my favourite drinks:

1. diet coke
2. beer
3. tea

three things i do just for me

1. nap
2. art
3. music

the earth says hello....

so, among many other things i did last sunday, i went to the media club to see serena ryder. ( or here.)

opening was joel kroeker . someone i've always meant to check out but haven't got around to it. i would put him in the singer/songwrite category, a little folk/country. it was enjoyable, and i would probably check him out some more. the one thing that we all decided was that he seemed really sincere on stage. sadly, i have nothing else to say about him. not because he wasn't good, but too much happened after his set.
ok, here's my small bitch about the show. because, really, what a blog entry be from me with out a bitch session. :) we were hanging out up front, and my new friend who we met in line goes to the bar to get a drink. now, we've been talking off and on during the set break and she even offered to get us beers as well. which we decline at this point. i mention this because to anyone around us, it looks like we are all together. anyways, she comes back and the girl that is behind us tries to refuse to let her back in. i had to tell the girl she was with us. and then she was all like, yah, but i'm short. well then, perhaps you should have gotten to the show earlier like we all did to get a good place up front. i'm sorry, i didn't realize being short allowed you to be rude and selfish. plus it's not like any of us are giants.

now, i'll be honest here. before the show, i wasn't all that familar with serena ryder's work. what i've heard, i really like. but i don't own any of her albums so i what i knew was kinda limited. besides wanting to go just to see her, we also went because it was cheap and it was at the media club. the media club is a great venue. the sound is always good and it is a very small club. i think the capacity is around 150.

i'm going to start off with ...the girl can sing! such a big voice out of such a wee lass. she started off solo, and acappella. she played a few songs solo, and then brought out her band. i really enjoyed how much fun they all seemed to be having and really seemed to enjoy playing together. serena ryder seemed not only happy to be performing for us, but genuinely appreciative of any audience acclaim.

now, because i didn't really know song names or even songs for that matter, the cover versions tend to stick out. i thought she did a great version of 'sisters of mercy'. and i loved 'good morning sunshine' as i have loved that song since i saw 'hair' the movie.

of the originals, the ones that i know the names of that stood out were 'my heart cries for you', 'out of the blue' and 'weak in the knees'. but the song that blew me away the most was called 'sing sing'. just her voice singing, her feet stomping and her hands clapping was so powerful.

she was incredibly charismatic. she told stories of playing the legion the other nite in tofino, and how 'drunken jeff' called her 'big ears'. another story was about how she had lost her voice, and was on the ferry. she wanted to get a coffee and was trying to write down her order. the waitress got impatient with her and left. a second waitress saw her with her notepad and chastised the first one with.. "she can't hear you! that's why she didn't answer you."
here she is covering 'morning dew'. she made us laugh because she said she couldn't sing, dance and play tambourine at the same time. she did just fine. :)
she totally blew me away. i will be going out and picking up her cds as soon as i can. and 'good morning sunshine' is my new song obsession.

smoke gets in your eyes...

i've just come back from seeing howie le rookie at studio 16. did i enjoy it? well, it was definately different. it's an irish play translated into french, if i understand the press correctly. it was definately a new experience watching a play, while reading subtitles. i've done it for the opera, and movies of course, but never live theatre. i had problems with the subtitles for a number of reasons.

1. why does it seem like subtitles are never proof read? this bothers me to no end. and it especially bothered me tonight because if this is an irish play, wasn't it written in english to begin with? so why did they not make sense in so many parts? couldn't they just put the original dialogue up? i guess, it could have been written in gaelic. but then, i would assume that at some point it was translated to english.

i'm going to go back to my subtitles issues in a minute. i'm going to deal with why i chose that title for my post. we enter the theatre and studio 16 is really, really small. and it is incredibly smoky. so smoky, that i feel that i can not see the stage clearly. the usher is asking everyone in french, if they speak english, and if so, is directing them to sit in seats marked 's'. for subtitles. these are the seats that offer the best view of the subtitling screen. which i thought was pretty cool.

anyways, we are waiting for the show to start and i'm starting to cough because of the vasts of fog in the room. and it smells. musty like. the show starts. it's basically a monologue in two acts by two different actors. so, it's extremely wordy. so i'm frantically trying to read the subtitles, while trying to focus on the actual acting. it's so foggy, i can't always read the subtitles, plus add in the typos and the fact that it does not seem like the subtitle screens are moving as fast as the actors are speaking. all of this leads to a feeling of general confusion on my part. the worst part was the smoke really affected my eyes and i kept rubbing them, missing even more subtitles. making me feel even more confused.

by the end of the play, all i could think about was how much i wanted out of that room. my eyes were itchy and watery, my head hurt, my stomach was queasy and i was trying not to cough. i was so happy to get out of that room. i couldn't wait to leave. i even skipped out on the free food and booze that was on offer after the play.

i think i would really like to see this play again, but in english so that i could really appreciate it. or at least in a theatre that does not have a fog machine. i do have to say that the stage design was pretty cool. i guess i would call it industrial derelict.

blech. i can still smell the smoke.

all apologies...

ok, i hate chain mail and these things that people forward you on luck etc. but i got one today, and i feeling a little superstitious and i don't need any bad luck right now. i have a big important week ahead of me. i don't believe in forwarding these things on, but i will post it on my blog because i do find "horrorscopes" fascinating.

before i post the chain, i found this online test that is supposed to tell you how superstitious you are. i scored 60, which means

"You're not 100% superstitious, but there are certain things that you'd rather avoid…just in case! Perhaps you have a certain good luck charm, or pass on chain letters, partially for the fun, partially to protect yourself. Overall, you likely realize deep down that superstitions are mostly not true, but the ones you follow have become old habit. It makes you uncomfortable to break them, so it's simply easier to keep - especially since many of them are tightly woven into our cultural fabric. Almost everyone has the little moment of hesitation when they realize it's Friday the 13th, for example, or says "bless you" when someone sneezes. As long as your superstitions are not controlling your life in any way, there's probably no harm in them. "

btw i love friday the 13th.

ok, here is the repost. i have taken out all bad luck threats as i will not forward those. although i'd like to say that my sign had the most bad luck attached to it, 24 years! also, what especially bugs me about this one is all the freakin' typos and bad grammer. if you are going to threaten me, at least have the courtesy to proof read it.

and again, my apologies.

if you want a lover...

ever know you're going to love a song before you even hear it?

i picked up the leonard cohen tribute/soundtrack 'i'm your man' awhile back. i hadn't had a chance to listen to it, but i ended up loading it onto my mp3 player the other day, and got excited because i had a) forgotten nick cave was on it and b) that he was doing 'i'm your man' . now, i'm a huge nick cave fan (but no blind devotion here, not a big fan of 'nocturama'). and even tho i was dying to hear it, i waited. i had a few other cds that i had to listen to first.

i ended up starting to listen to the soundtrack when i got off the skytrain on my way home, and of course, by this time i had forgotten about the nick cave track. which i think was a good thing.

i'm standing on the bus, when this sleazy intro comes pouring into my ears. and i'm thinking god, yes. even before the vocals hit, i know it's nick. and i love it. it's sexy, it's desperate and i can't wait to get home to listen to it thru speakers and not my headphones. i want to enjoy every single lyric he sings. and when he sings, if you want a father for your child, he makes me want to say yes. for the first time ever. :)

i listened to it all the way home. over and over again. it's my new obsession.

i need to see this movie.

i don't know how to load the song up so instead i offer this bonus link... jethro lazenby, nick cave's model son.

edit...i tried to link this yesterday but blogger was being a pain. here's a visual, courtesy of youtube. unfortunately the intro is buried.

magic bus...

i've been taking the bus to/from work a lot lately. and i'm totally into it. i know i complained about it earlier, but i've totally gotten my bus groove back.

people who know me now, think of me as a driver. i'm always driving somewhere. but what most of them don't know is that i was not always a driver. i spent most of my life as a non-driver. i walked, took the bus, or bummed rides off people for most of my life. including a good portion of my adult years. as a kid, who needed to go far? as a young teenager, well, i lived within walking distance of a mall with a cinema. and once i got seriously into my teens, i only really cared about going one place. downtown vancouver. and i lived on a major route into downtown. every 15 minutes (1/2 hour at night) i could catch a bus and be downtown within 45 minutes. and that's what we did every saturday morning, it seemed. plus my dad was always going downtown or somewhere, he drove a van, and i would fill it with all my friends.

as i got older, i got a job downtown. i partied downtown. and again, a car was unnecessary. i could catch a late bus every hour until 3 or 4 in the morning and walk home from the last stop. plus as an added bonus, one of my friends who lived near me had a car. so until we had a major falling out, i got a lot of rides from her.

the reason i finally got my license was i got a job where i needed to have a car. and i discovered the joys of driving. the freedom to go wherever, whenever. i was lucky. i learnt to drive in winter, during a year where we had a lot of snow, and tons of rain. and i had to drive downtown every day. i consider this lucky as because of this, none of these conditions bother me to drive. and i know how to drive in them. i drove every day for about a year and a half, got a new job and become a bus person again. eventually i moved downtown, and discovered the joys of being a pedestrian.

thru a serious of events, i ended up back in the 'burbs and working way out in the 'burbs for the first time. suddenly, i had to drive to work. the bus schedule and routes were not so kind going anywhere other than downtown vancouver. and although i gained much time driving, i think i lost just as much. i didn't read as much. i missed my morning nap. and i missed the feeling of starting and ending the work day just kicking back and relaxing.

i did take the bus occasionally. and it felt weird. i couldn't read without feeling ill. i felt anxious. and i never had tunes, so the quietness would bug me. and i felt crowded and cramped with all the people.

but i've taken the bus a lot recently. at first, i couldn't deal with it. but after a few days, i adjusted. and started to enjoy it. i like walking to my bus stop every morning. i had forgotten what it's like to walk somewhere by myself. without my dog. setting my own pace. i have my mp3 player so i can choose when i want quiet. i relearnt how to read on the bus. i like being able to gaze out and look at things. and i'm enjoying the drama of the people.

today's morning excitment was the guy getting busted for fare fraud on the skytrain. evening drama, was our bus driver lecturing us on when we are supposed to ring the bell. i love these little things that happen. and i would have missed it all, if i had drove.

{ps.. but there is no way i'm giving up my car.... :) }

i'm coming on like a hurricane...

ok, so i didn't have time to do the recap on the last show pre-xmas. maybe i'll be wacky and do it this week. i still have the notes.

i will be around this week, but i will probably miss the last ten minutes or so. there is no way in hell i'm taking the chance and missing one second of 24!

please excuse any typos. i'm tired and i know i didn't proof it very well.

the trio returns!

bob laughs about something. and for the record, i will state that bob has a great laugh.

they are using a new sound to chime people in on myspace. i, of course, recognize it in a heartbeat. it's one of the bells from ac/dc's hells bells.

bob says his time off was great because he learned a new trick. when you are not at work, don't work. he spent time incommunicado. he learnt he was not allergic to flannel. mr. stroumboulopoulos texted bob and just figured he and his wife went away. last weekend, mr. stroumboulopoulos went 27 hours incommunicado. he shut off his cell phone/blackberry, his home phone and closed his lap top. bob talks about how big cities are hard to get away from. you have to close the front door and not feel obliged to answer the phone just because it is ringing. (i am so with you bob!). mr. stroumboulopoulos says he used to be that way, but clearly he's not now. but he shares why you should open mail. he came home friday to an orange postcard. his electricity was going to be cut off. he put it down on his coffee table with his mail pile and there were five separate envelopes from them. he pays bills when he flippin' gets to them. he hasn't had heat from a couple of times lately but that is because his furnace was broken. bob talks about how weird it is when your house doesn't work. (i can relate to that, especially recently. power failures gives your house such a surreal feeling). they compare it to when escalators are broken and you have to walk up them like stairs. mr. stroumboulopoulos actually pauses, and looks around for another option. what do you mean i have to use stairs? bob says something like it's like bringing the outdoors in. mr. stroumboulopoulos says that why he has doors and doesn't live in bc where they like doing stuff outdoors.

bob says 2007 seems to be the time to call him and pressure him to have kids.

radio clash - the clash

who made who - ac/dc

there is talk of the new arcade fire and about how much music they play on their show, considering they do a talk show. bob is very proud of their play list. but he wonders are they open minded or non-commited? mr. stroumboulopoulos votes for non-committed.

bob thinks he resembles an angry, drunk bob mould in his new picture on strombo.com. the photo to him says i was once very big in the indie scene. donnie doesn't like his picture as you can't see his face. mr. stroumboulopoulos says he works with divas. alex likes bob's picture as it reminds me of a before picture.

they talk about 'questions about stuff'. bob says that alex is going to do a dramatization about 'stuff' , which seems to shock him. he says he thought he was just going to ask bob a question about stuff. to which he gets the reply of everything about you is a dramatization.

alex calls the stuff segment. he says that etiquette in public sounds nice. bob says that that is alex's question. alex says he wasn't listening to the other ones. (this is one of the many reasons why i enjoy alex.)

the talk changes to the environment and how the polls suggest that this is the most important concern to canadians right now, even above health care and afghanistan. mr. stroumboulopoulos suggests that the health care and afghanistan combine and overthrow the environment for the number one position. mr. stroumboulopoulos understands why it is number one, it is for him. but the question is will people do anything about it? do they care enough? bob has been holding back his answer to this question for four days. bob thinks they do. he says the reason the environment is number one is fluke and the right guy at the same time. the fluke is an incredibly warm winter (this would be for the eastern listeners, out west we are having an horrible winter) and al gore. mr. stroumboulopoulos says that he thinks that al gore is not telling the truth when he says he is not running for president. alex says that the real question is what are you going to do about it? he doesn't think you can do anything. what the question should be is what are we going to do now that it is going to get hot? you need to adapt to the new reality. (interesting concept.)

should bob have kids? a caller calls in and says if you do, don't raise them like my parents raised me. laughter all around. the advice is don't tell them rock n roll is the sound of the devil. don't insult the way they dress.

apparently they are a week or so away from podcasting.

new arcade fire.

mr. stroumboulopoulos has never watched 'saved by the bell'.

sweet georgia brown is played in honour of the harlem globetrotters. bob and mr. stroumboulopoulos both were at the same game as kids but they did not know each other. bob still thinks the pail filled with confetti and not water is the best gag.

back to the caller and advice for child rearing. if you have a girl, don't let her be a prostit-tot. bob calls music videos these days nympo-mercials.

bob wants to know why environmentalists all have dry hair.

a man calls in and says people only care about the environment in the summertime when it actually affects you. and as to kids, sure why not. alex asks bob, aren't you already too old to take kids to the park.

alex suggests that in the future, we should all wear unitards. coloured unitards that separate us by classes. like in that book. bob suggests the bible. alex says no, the other one. they decide on 1984 (which is so wrong, it's brave new world. which he later says is basically the same thing. umm, no.)

'the hour' will apparently be broadcasting from other cities after all this season. or at least one other city. valentine's week, they will be in london, england.

rona ambrose is discussed. mr. stroumboulopoulos says she got hosed by the government. bob says she reminds him of fay wray being offered up to king kong as a sacrifice.

claire martin is on! she basically says the good weather (again, in the east) is due to two factors. one is just luck and the second is el nino. she also tells a story how she was grocery shopping and had kraft dinner in one hand and feminine napkins in the other and was recognized. she wondering do i hide the fact that i can't cook or do i hide ...?

people always ask her about the weather, even mr. stroumboulopoulos keeps coming up to her, can i take my bike out of storage?

they talk about some guy who had 37 rats (in cages) and six cats on a sailboat. the same guy has been in trouble before, having 1300 rats in cages. alex doesn't see what the big deal is. he wants to know if they are individual cages. alex says he may have good reason. bob and mr. stroumboulopoulos agree that three is the right number of pets. mr. stroumboulopoulos throws in you can have more than three fish, but not in one tank unless you have a huge tank. bob says no more than three fish bowls. and that very small animals are only counted as 1/2 a pet. like mountain hamsters. they discuss the ½ pet issue and decide that it is any non dog that is under ten pounds. mr. stroumboulopoulos says he doesn't want his cats, he kinda inherited them. he was thinking of a third stray, but thought he would have to trade it in if he wanted a dog. alex doesn't agree with them. he says you can't go around telling people what they can't and can't do with sharing their love. he is not going to tell you you can't have five pets. they can't believe mr. stroumboulopoulos' cats are still alive. he says he feeds them, but doesn't clean their litter enough. he says his place is disgusting.

this week in bob. mr. stroumboulopoulos says that bob has his head in his hands. alex says it was a bit of trouble this week, bob was keeping on the downlow. he thought about doing a best of bob 2006, the year in review. he was going to call it things they didn't want you to hear. but then friday came along, or in bob's world... chip wagon friday. alex says he found out thru his journalistic what do you call it .. mr. stroumboulopoulos suggests research.. and alex says yah. bob goes to the chip wagon on front street every friday. which alex finds kinda weird as he does not need another tradition where he eats. he took pictures but doesn't have them with him of bob eating the food. alex suggests posting them and mr. stroumboulopoulos says that bob may not let you. bob is eating from a box, not a cup, not a bucket but a box of fries. and the fries were the side dish. mr. stroumboulopoulos says that bob doesn't eat meat on friday as bob is catholic. bob says that you research but you don't know i'm catholic. alex says wait i'm not finished. oh maybe i am. alex took three pictures of bob eating. bob says why can't you take a picture of me when i'm eating alfalfa sprouts. alex says because they don't deep fry alfalfa sprouts. bob says it's not my fault they give them to me in a box. alex says you don't have to eat them all. bob says he is like santa, he gives out the fries. and then he sees alex jump up on a desk and take photos of me. bob is trying to eat better this year. alex says bob doesn't look happy in the pictures, eating his favourite food on his favourite day.

melissa myspaces in with the comment, bob did want a new picture. bob laughs. melissa always has the wittiest things to say.

back to unitards. alex says that everyone is missing the point. he says that he is saying that it would look cool if everyone would wear one. he says it would be good for terrorism. bob asks him to explain. alex says you couldn't hide anything. bob says isn't that the problem. alex says that would go away after awhile. cut outs of the unitards are discussed, ok'd initially and then rejected. alex says the over the head unitard would be better. bob says white ones would make you look like sperm. mr. stroumboulopoulos says he is saving this to play at both of their retirement from this business parties.

a plug for the upcoming frank black interview. (whatever. stop plugging this until you know when it is on!)

things they like.

alex likes everything except forced tipping. he doesn't mind giving people tips. but he went to a restaurant and they automatically added a gratituity. and they were only a party of two. (don't even get me started on the custom of tipping). there was nothing on the menu to indicate an automatic tip. mr. stroumboulopoulos is against this practice unless it is a big party. and then it is ok. alex says everyone knows that. that's fine. bob asks if alex was difficult. alex says no. mr stroumboulopoulos says that alex is a fussy eater. and that he fed him caribou once. alex says it was raw. there was blood in my mouth. mr. stroumboulopoulos says he didn't tell alex, he thought it would be funny. alex ate it and his face went white. alex says he was nice about it he went around the shed and buried it in the snow. he didn't spit it up right in front of everyone. bob says alex is a drag to cook for. he and his wife have him over for dinner and he swears it is like preparing for dignitaries. alex says that he has allergies. bob says they go to sit on the couch and alex says aren't we going to eat at a table. alex wants to know why they were eating at the couch. bob says that everyone eats in front of the tv. alex says but you have a guest over. your wife didn't want to eat by the tv.

they talk about movies, foreign movies. mr. stroumboulopoulos says he assumed the film would not be in english since it was up for best foreign film somewhere. bob says if you think my opinion means anything, i feel sorry for you. alex says they subtitled it for you. bob says well, they subtitle it for everyone. bob loved little miss sunshine. mr. stroumboulopoulos thinks it was ok. bob says that mr. stroumboulopoulos likes crappy movies and is the worst movie reviewer because he is afraid not to like something and admit that he wasted two hours. alex says mr. stroumboulopoulos will laugh at stuff no one else does and you think he's at a higher level, but no he's not.

they talk about tipping and dating and it seems like bob slips up and starts to say stuff he isn't supposed and mr. stroumboulopoulos seems all panicky and the conversation pulls out a bit and they quickly sum up by saying they have all dated others before. alex says it is not my fault servers don't get a lot of money (i am with you on that).

mr. stroumboulopoulos loved the arcade fire this week.

i think i'm angry still...

i'm mad. pissed. riled up.

i promised all my lovely readers (ha ha ha) that my next 'the hour' post would be about doyle. but i was on another site today and i'm got so riled up, i started to leave a rant, and then had to reign myself in. because it's not my blog, and i shouldn't leave a long rant as a comment. so, i've flipped over to my blog and i'm going to try and fully express myself here.

i was reading the lovely barbara b's latest contribution at notpaidbythehour.com. i'm a big fan of this site. i only started reading it regularly this summer so i can only comment from there. one of the reasons i enjoy this site is it's not a huge lovefest. it's not a i love him, he's hot, i want to marry him type of site. i'm not into that, and it's why i don't join a lot of stuff like that. i'm not judging those sites, to each their own and hey, i have read many a dirty post about mr. sutherland with no guilt. :)

but notpaidbythehour isn't like that. the contributors are all intelligent, insightful opinionated people. and i may not agree with what they say, but i can't wait to read what they say.

the latest post was written by barbara b. again, well written and expressed. and i do agree so much with her. so why i am i riled up? it's because of the comments. now, i think i have expressed (and if i haven't, it's something you should know about me) that i do not care if you agree with me. in fact, it's probably more fun if you don't. i enjoy a good debate. about anything. politics, world events, tv, music, fashion etc... it doesn't matter. but here is what i don't like. if you don't agree with me, fine. but don't tell me i don't have a right to my opinion or my opinion is wrong or stupid. or that i shouldn't express my opinion. that bugs me. a lot.

so, various people are commenting. some agree with her, and some disagree. great, we have some discourse here. i love it. and then, the tone shifts. into what i've started to dislike about websites/forums/myspace etc where 'the hour' and mr. stroumboulopoulos are discussed. it seems like you are not allowed to utter one bad word about either. you can only talk about how brilliant the show/he is, how he is the greatest thing to happen to canada since our medical system and of course, how "hot" you think he is. god forbid you try and offer constructive criticism. apparently if you don't like it, you should just stop watching. well, i guess that's one way of dealing with it. but it's not me. if i don't like something, i'd rather try and change it. especially in this situation. because if i don't say anything, how will the powers that be know how viewers feel? because if the ratings are as low as people are talking about, they want to know why. and maybe, just maybe, they might tweak it in a different direction.

and lately it just seems like the atttitude around the show/host has been, you must adore everything he does. christ, i don't even think that of mr. sutherland. you couldn't pay me to sit thru half the movies he's made. and i think liz phair is one of the most brilliant artists ever. but even i didn't buy her last album. i don't really believe in blind devotion.

i've ranted. i'm not mad as hell anymore, just feeling disheartened by it all.

insert badly hummed version of the munsters theme song here...

i just found out today that yvonne de carlo died a few days ago. it's weird because i'm in the middle of a huge munsters marathon.

imdb doesn't even list her death yet. how sad. here is an obit for lovely lily munster .

r.i.p. ms. de carlo.

since you've been gone...

this is apparently old news but i just read about it today. it's got to be the the weirdest thing musically i've read in a long time.

mike watt is working with kelly clarkson?

i'm still trying to wrap my head around it.

bye bye love...

so, stephen harper finally replaced rona ambrose as minister of the environment. i would feel bad for her, because i do feel that she's been made the scapegoat of the conservatives misjudgment on how much we canadians care about the environment. however, i don't feel bad. one, she's made a lot of stupid mistakes in parliament (which i've previously blogged about) that she has to take responsibility for. and two, from what i gather, she's been a total yes 'man' in that position. if you don't speak your mind, you deserve what you get.

and now that the conservatives have decided that the environment is an important issue, god forbid they would leave a woman in charge of it.

under pressure...

so, i'm back with time to blog and now i can't get started. i think i'm putting too much pressure on myself to try and write some of the many blog ideas i have had running thru my brain for the past month or so. i can't believe it's been that long since i really put anything down. other than my friday random top ten.

so, i think i'll start easy and talk about my day yesterday and how much i hate bc transit. or whatever they are called now. i got soaking wet and chilled to the bone yesterday because i attempted to follow their advice. never again!

it snowed yesterday morning and i decided to take transit to work. i have been meaning to do this since the start of january but i've been sick so i'd rather drive in my toasty car than sit on a bus.

i put on my snow boots (as opposed to my rain boots. more on my boots later) , bundled up and headed out to my bus stop. i live in a very hilly area, on the edge of a mountain so this can be an ordeal in the snow. it's all uphill and if nobody has broken a trail yet, it can take me more than 1/2 hour to walk the five blocks to the stop. luckily, the snow isn't that bad, and people have been up and about so there is already a trail for me to follow. i'm 1/2 way up my street when i realized i forgot my gloves. and my scarf. but i think no big deal. i'll be ok. it's not that bad. (ha!)

i get to the bus stop and it's still snowing. the bus comes and i'm like a little snowgirl getting on the bus. and everybody on the bus stares at me! and moves away. like i'm some kind of freak. gee, i'm sorry i'm covered in snow. but it's snowing out! and i tried to shake as much off as possible.

other than that, my ride is uneventful. however, even tho i know how to get to work by transit, i checked the website and they give me some other directions. i think, well, they must know best so i take their advice. big mistake! the route is not a direct route and i am supposed to get off the bus and walk up three blocks. but by the time i figure that out, i am way past my stop and have to wait until i can get off in an area i know which becomes five blocks. uphill. in the snow. without my gloves. i am frozen by the time i get to my new bus stop. i go into this shop to pick up some lunch because i figure i'll be too busy to take a break, and the shop clerk totally gives me and her co-worker attitude. i ask what something is, and the girl helping me asks this other girl what it is and she is all like 'it's all listed on the front'. um, no it's not. i am not a moron. and the girl helping me is like, no, it's not. so then she says, oh, well it used to be. yah, that's great honey. but what is it?!

i get to work finally and time flies by. soon, it is time for me to go home. and i think, i am going to give this bus route that bc transit wants me to take another chance. plus now i get to walk downhill and it's not snowing, only raining so maybe it is a good route. i head out and i am a block away from the office when i realize that i forgot to change back into my snowboots. i am sad because i decided i was going to try and incorporate a blog for each of my 42 pairs of shoes. my snowboots were to be the first of them. oh well, i think. no big deal.

i end up having to walk 1/2 mile until i can actually find a bus stop. three buses pass me so i know i'm on the right road. it's dark, bitterly cold, and slushy. my lovely australian boots are now soaked. i am cursing the fact that my gloves are at home and my boots are at work. i finally get to the bus stop. i am soaking wet. the air smells. bad. i am not sure of what. plus the three people at the stop are smoking (but that is not what smells bad). i feel like passing out. the bus finally shows up and the bus driver looks at me funny as i pay. whatever. after i sit down and glance at my ticket, i realize that the reason he has is because i have way overpaid my fare. since it took me 45 minutes to actually get on a bus, i did not notice that peak hours were over. damn!

i manage to dry off a little on the skytrain home. i get on my last bus home, looking like a dried drowned rat and mr. handsome is my bus driver. great. like i don't feel crappy enough as it is. mr. handsome is also very nice. but i am so not even able to think about flirting with him. i reach my stop, exit the bus [of course pausing to thank mr. handsome.. who tells me i'm welcome :) ], and step into a big pile of slush. for some reason, it had slipped my mind that the slush and snow would be even worse in my neighbourhood. i inch my way home thru slush and ice, stopping only to buy an extremely expensive carton of milk (but i had the bonus of picking up tv week with kiefer sutherland on the cover) and a chicken pot pie. my boots finally gave up the fight against water when i stepped in a slush puddle that went up past my ankles. more than two hours after leaving work, i finally arrive home and leave a pile of wet stuff all the way from the front door into the bathroom. i spend the evening, with the heat cranked up, laying on the couch, watching the munsters.

now, most of this could have been avoided had i just went with my initial plan of catching the bus outside of the office. the option never came up in my transit search because this apparently takes 8 minutes longer than their option. whatever. last time i'm making that mistake!

hopefully writing this will kickstart me into writing some better stuff later today.

cuz i'm the garbage man....

nothing like getting up early to put the garbage out and finding out your whole world is covered in a white blanket. reminding me of my initial reaction to a comment on 'the hour' yesterday when they said the whole country is experiencing a mild winter. umm, not the whole country, you self centered eastern bastards! :) (yah, i wake up pretty cranky)

this morning, i woke up 1/2 hour after i was supposed to start work. yep, no power for me. and as a special bonus, i got the morning off. yippee!

just as soon as i belong, then it's time i disappear...

a little metallica for you.

to all my blogging/online pals, i know i owe some of you some posts, and i owe some of you some cds. and i owe all of you comments but i am working 24/7 right now and will be for the next two weeks. ok, not quite 24/7 but it sure feels like it. i will catch up with you all in a couple of weeks. and happy holidays if i don't talk to you until after christmas.

i will leave you with my latest pondering. i was driving to work yesterday and i see a courier car. right on the side of it, it says it is a driver training car. i look at the driver, and he is wearing a helmet. what are they training him for?

if the strombo show is live this week, i will be around online then.

i'm bored, i'm the chairman of the bored . . .

so last week i mentioned that i would be missing the first hour or so of the strombo show as i had to work. i raced home after work, got my car stuck in the snow as someone had parked in my space and had to dig myself out. i finally got inside, only to realize that alex wasn’t on (apparently he was sick) and there would be no this week in bob. thanks to toccata and evelyne for offering to fill me in.

the players were strombo, bob, and hilary doyle. ‘nuff said. my next 'the hour' post will deal with ms. doyle.

normally, when i miss part of the show, i go back and read the myspace comments to fill in. i had no desire to do that this week. so this week, the recap only deals with the last hour.

mr. stroumboulopoulos mentions evelyne and the goat and how he met her and her mom in montreal. i believe he said he loved her as well. :)

new segment this week in animals. the only story i followed was hunter, the black lab who saved his family, only to be put up for adoption. mr. stroumboulopoulos called them a bunch of asses. however, it didn’t seem as black and white as that when i read the story.

dittytalk.com, a myspace for christians is discussed. apparently instead of tom as your first friend, it’s jesus. bob thinks it should then be hisspace.com

things they liked.

mr. stroumboulopoulos is going to like dec. 6th as this is the day of the special olympics gala fundraiser.

bob likes bob karlin from the daily show. he was at the onion.com, then space ghost and now the daily show. he’s now leaving the daily show and bob wants to send a shout out. he wants his life.

bob has no heroes as he is to busy resenting other people’s success.

bob thinks show me the money with william shatner is the best show on tv. he highly recommends it. mr. stroumboulopoulos says you don’t like this show. you told me it was a crap show but you can’t stop watching it. bob says he likes crap.

overall, i didn't really enjoy the show that much this week. and the feedback i got from people, well, they felt the same way. let's hope alex is better tonight!

it's beginning to look a lot like christmas...

i collect christmas music. the good, the bad and the ugly. i don't discriminate. and for years now, i have made a crazy ass christmas tape for my friends. and until last year, it was a tape. not a cd.

i finally made the switch to cd last year. the reason i held off for so long was because i really enjoyed working with the format of the tape. two sides. the tape evolved early on into a good/bad side. the good side, was guarenteed to be family friendly. you could play it with kids or grandparents present. the bad side, well, you took your chances. plus a lot of my cool xmas tunes are actually on vinyl. and i am not sure how to convert vinyl into mp3's.

since last year was the first on cd, i made a two cd set. a kind of best of you could say. one good, one bad. however, that was a one shot deal. i am still strugging with how i will do the break down on one cd. but that is this weekend's project.

i'm feeling festive so if anyone is interested in this project, let me know.

at the car wash...

ok, to the middle aged blonde white trash woman driving the chevy truck (licence plate 684 K*R). the next time you cut me off, i am going to ram my car into your damn truck!

picture this. an extremely busy intersection ( lougheed and willingdon). me, at the traffic light, waiting for the light to turn green. a different truck beside me. the light turns green. the truck beside me speeds on thru the intersection. i start to go, and a truck tries to sneak into the intersection to make a right turn. i pause, the truck stops. silly me, i think because you have stopped and i have a freakin' green light, i should be able to continue on thru. but nooooo, you wait until i have sped up, and then you enter the intersection. and then freakin' stop 1/2 thru your turn. blocking my entire lane! in the middle of rush hour. where the hell did you want me to go lady?! it's not like going into the lane next to me was an option. hi, lots of cars there. so i slam on my brakes, and wait for you to figure out how to straighten out your truck in order to complete the turn. grrrrrrr.

the above happened right after something else happened. i hate squeegee kids. with a passion. they always have the dirtiest water and after they are done, my windshield is worse than before. plus i feel it is extremely danagerous as well. so i was sitting at the light, and this squeegee kid jumps out of nowhere and starts washing my windshield. i'm like.. nooo, noo. but she keeps doing it, and i am surprised because she had good water and soap and did this awesome job. and then smiled and walked away when i shook my head. i felt bad. but do i give money for a good job when it is something i feel is wrong? it's not like i don't give money in other situations. and i've bought food for people as well. i am so conflicted.

loving would be easy if your colors were like my dream ...

ok, i have to remember to turn in early for the strombo show. i like to hear him and the pastor talking. this week mr. stroumboulopoulos plugged the upcoming show with whether or not you should date your friend’s sister. the pastor said no. but then mr. stroumboulopoulos countered with, but what if she’s really hot. laughter all around. the pastor seems really cool. i remember liking him when he was on 'the hour'.

this week’s excuse for any inaccuracies. i had a lot on my mind. we will get back to that later.

and now the strombo show. the triumvirate returns.

bob talks about the jerk of an indie record store guy at rotate this. total jack black from high fidelity. these people do exist. (and i can vouch for that!) bob called them up, doing research for the hour and wanted to know about canadian new releases. the guy said ‘yah, umm, we don’t really do that. why don’t you call somebody else? bob talked about them not wanting to sell records and mr. stroumboulopoulos said they want to sell records, just not to you. bob does not go to these kind of stores. he says go to hmv. mr. stroumboulopoulos says they don’t have what he needs. alex never had that experience and why do i care what they think.

mr. stroumboulopoulos has a facebook account.

bob is growing weird facial hair.

mr. stroumboulopoulos was driving up to the radio station today. he likes to drive fast. it was a gorgeous day in toronto and he had the window down, and was dancing and singing to system of a down. he looked over at the car next to him and a girl was filming him on her cell phone. part of him wanted to run them off the road. he was thinking what did i say, what did i do? once you are famous, if you do something wrong, someone will see it. alex suggests that perhaps the girl was filming him because he was an idiot, not because he was famous. mr. stroumboulopoulos says that he doesn’t view himself as famous. and that the girl said his name. alex says that if you don’t want to be filmed being a jackass in public, don’t be a jackass.

donnie was out a couple of weeks ago at the opening of the new james bond movie. it was packed and there were no seats available. the couple in front of them were making out like crazy. mr. stroumboulopoulos asked if that was all they were doing. donnie says yes, it was gross and they didn’t stop when the movie started. alex wants to know how graphic it was. donnie says it was pretty bad. mr. stroumboulopoulos wants to know if you could see four hands. donnie says three. mr. stroumboulopoulos says it is ok to make out in movie theatres, but not sold out ones. sit in the back. he was an usher for seven years. mr. stroumboulopoulos says it is not ok in family movies, but james bond is ok. bob is totally fine with it. it’s not in the best taste when the lights are on. but it’s love, you gotta let it go. in paris, people make out in the subway. i’m with george, it’s more tasteful when the theatre is (and i have no idea what the next word is). mr. stroumboulopoulos has seen it in theatres as a usher. when he was 15, got to see man on man action in one. ok, so that’s what that looks likes. bob issues out some make out challenge, it has to be love, not vulgar. (thought – wasn’t donnie who told the story about the cab driver not liking his pda’s?)

mr. stroumboulopoulos was definitely driving over the speed limit during his dancing episode. bob wants no loud music, no cell phones when driving.

hannah sung is on. plugging her work with care canada.

the discussion turns to karma. bob wants to define it. payback in this world. bob wants to know in this life? mr. stroumboulopoulos says i don’t care what happens when you die. bob tells a story about a not so cool girl in school that had a crush on him. 15 years later in a bar, a super model looks at bob and says.. bobby is that you? same girl from from grade seven. she’s super model gorgeous. she makes aphrodite looks like a mute. she says that bob was always so sweet to her. and she thought what a good guy. she’s going to med school and is bartending to pay bills. bob ends up asking her out and she turns him down.

the n.s – sloan (which is weird, because it was in my random top ten this week).

so lonely – the police. currently mr. stroumboulopoulos’ favourite police track (as previously mentioned, i remember because i love this song as well.)

there are a lot of callers about karma. alex feels things are more random. and then someone named cindy from toronto calls in and is so mean to bob. because she says maybe bob looks like a loser and that is why the girl didn’t go out with him. alex says oh my god, that was so mean. (i could not agree any more).

someone sends in a message about karma and about some bar where mr. stroumboulopoulos worked. some girl he hit on got hit by a car. it then goes into a conversation about whether or not women like being hit on or being hit on by mr. stroumboulopoulos. or something like that. and shouldn’t mr. stroumboulopoulos have been hit by the car, if it was karma related. (but i only now understood that point that the original person meant was that because she turned him down, she got hit by the car. at least i am assuming that is what they meant)

a cab driver calls in. his mom loves mr. stroumboulopoulos.

bob grew his facial hair because he had a limited amount of shaving cream. he was mortified. the last thing he wanted was a goatee. but since then, a woman stopped him in the hall at work with ‘you’re looking good’. he can not stressed how often that does not happen. it’s probably the first time. and he got some really nice sweater comments on a sweater he has worn plenty times before. the next day, a group of girls were like.. hey come party with us. alex thinks bob is making all of this up.

and now, it’s time for this week in bob with our host, alex! (clap clap)

sunday – they are at the radio station. bob is very angry because he hasn’t eaten. he is even angrier because the pizza man is 40 minutes late. bob gets angry at the pizza people on the phone. alex has to leave the room. bob devours the pizza and then he gets someone to go get him a sandwich because he wants to eat again. alex has to watch him wolf down a hoagie.

monday – bob is wearing what is pratically a jogging suit. alex thinks he has given up. this is a uniform of one who has given up.

tuesday/wednesday/thursday – bob is in a bad mood these days. stay away from him. do not pay attention to him. alex does not want to get involved in his life.

friday – on the way out from work. alex is working on the computer and bob starts rubbing his shoulders. it’s awkward, but not in a gay way. bob then leaves. he doesn’t say anything. what does it mean?
