Where have all the good pancakes gone?

i've recently come back from my third annual trek to the calgary stampede. people who know me are always surprised that i enjoy calgary so much. i like my friends but they can be such urban snobs at times. they think that all calgary is is a town full of religious right wing homophobic red necks. i've been there many a time in the last three years (not just for stampede and i don't think it would be fair to judge calgary at stampede) and i have yet to meet one redneck. at least one in the open. everyone has been super nice and friendly to me. sometimes that dissappoints me. i love looking for a verbal fight...:)

the music scene seems really cool there. i'm not sure what it's like to play there and there does seem to be an extremely high number of cover bands. i have discovered quite a few bands i like there via the internet and yakking to people who live there. i always have a list of local stuff to pick up at Sloth (love love love sloth) when i visit.

but this trip seemed to be about food. i'm bummed out that i never got to try the bbq at palomino's. i had a stampede breakfast there, potatoes were yummy but the rest was average. if the money hadn't gone to charity, i'd have been pretty pissed. had breakfast while watching the world cup final at the drum and monkey. breakfast was good, but my friend had the mac and cheese and it was yummy... i'm going back to have that next time. loved the dogs at tubby dogs... i went for the a-bomb.. mmmm potatoe chips...

but here is my beef with calgary.. where the hell do you get pancakes? i'm not talking fancy crepes, or fruit filled buckwheat ones. but good ole buttermilk or plain pancakes. even the few stampede breakfasts i have gone to have not had any pancakes. every place i have gone to for breakfast does not have pancakes on the menu. i don't want ricky's or denny's or milestones, i can eat at those anywhere. i even asked the guys at my car rental place this time and they were like, i don't know where you can get pancakes. i am convinced there are no pancakes in calgary.

I think its hard to find good pancakes anywhere. But I'll direct you Barbara B, who knows all things Calgary (and music) so for your next trip...

Gee thanks Allison.

You have trouble finding pancakes in Calgary, 668? Really? I don't even really like pancakes and I can't walk a block without tripping over a pancake breakfast during Stampede. And frankly I have never seen a pancake breakfast without pancakes. Tip: they are always advertised in the Herald - the big pancake breakfasts anyway. And did I read you correctly that you PAID for a pancake breakfast? Never heard of such a thing. tsk tsk.

i know i know i can't believe i paid.. but i really wanted to go the palomino club and they were charging. but it went to charity so i felt ok with that.

i could probably have found free pancakes at stampede but i am most interested in finding a place with pancakes for my non-stampede trips...:)
