so i'm going to jump ahead, in the story of my search for work as i am currently in a dilema (i have no idea how to spell it, and i'm too lazy too look it up).
i pretty much have three job offers this week. one, i'm turning down as it conflicts with the other two. it is office temping for a couple of months, with a strong possibility of permanent hire.
the second is a job that is pretty cool, but is only full time for one month. no possibility of extension. the money is decent, better than average for temping.
the third is basically the same job i used to do. i don't mind it and i'm good at it. this job would be full time with benefits, etc etc. the other thing is, that there is not many places in vancouver in my industry, that have these jobs open.
i did email the strombo show on it, and i got their advice (i'll discuss later). but now, i'm throwing it out to you. what would you do?
the decision has to be made tomorrow.

I have no advice. None. I do however have one question. The job that is pretty cool that you could have for a month, I realize there is no possibility for an extension, but would it give you experience that you could use on your resume to further what it is you really want to do?
Ok maybe two questions. The second job that you know you're good at that would allow you to stay in Vancouver could it eventually lead either through experience or connections to a job that you really want?
I'm in the same time zone as you and will be up for awhile so if you want someone just to "chat" with feel free.
I just edited my profile to show my email address. I did that in case you wanted to rant, ask or I don't know make comments that you might not want to make on such a public forum.
i'm cool making the comments here.
the cool job does have some interesting potential. i could make some interesting contacts. it's stuff i have never done before and it would be a totally fun atmosphere (i think). i get to use a mac computer, which i never have done before. and it could give me some skills which may make me more hireable in other fields.
the second job, i might make some new contacts, but i think most of them would be people i know already. they seemed to hint at paying for school tho.
hopefully this makes sense, i'm pretty drowsy at the moment.
I'm going to remove my email address and that last comment then.
Is there anyway you can get a more definitive answer of the paying for school bit. That sounds really good. If they would pay for schooling and if it's schooling in an area you want that sounds like quite the opportunity.
However, I once had a job I hated. HATED. It taught me a lot. It taught me not to take work just because of good pay and a job that others would think as a really good job.
By the way my questions are not questions you have to answer just maybe ask yourself.
If you take the cool job for the month and it turns out to be in fact for the month can you get by for awhile until you find other work? If so, maybe you should go for it.
i think it's good to answer your questions, because it makes me think. and writing them down helps.
i think i can get by ok. i've basically put myself on a supertight budget right now so, i will have two months of full time work until february rolls around.
it will be nice to forget about job hunting for a little while at least!
You know, I think you should take the cool job. Who knows where it might lead and if it's more in what you're wanting go for it. The other job might be more secure but you know life is not secure and do you really want to get to the end thinking, "If only!"
p.s. I don't think I have ever regretted things I've tried even in some of those instances where I failed miserably but I have had a couple of regrets about things not pursued.
For someone who has no advice I sure as hell am dishing it out in big dollops! You can always tell me to f off!
i try not to have regrets, i try to look at what i would have lost by not going down that path. ie.. friends, experiences etc.
and if i didn't want advice or opinions, i wouldn't have posted. :)
Take the cool job.
Good luck with whatever you have decided 668 aka neighbour of the beast!
Well, I guess you've already made the choice, I'm sure you made the right call. I probably would go for the one that provides the most stability, but if its not something you like, then well...i dunno. See, i'm no help.
So... what did you decide agent 668?
I was gonna say I would go for job #3. Which one did you end up chosing?
Don't you love it. We're all checking how you made out today!
My mother's saying, "Just as long as you're happy, we're happy too," definitely applies here as well.
post to come. :)
thanks for all the thoughts, it really does help.
